Believed to appeared as the reflections of a star and the crescent shaped moon on blood pool during the battle.

The crescent and star are signifigant in the Islamic religion. Also, red stands for bravery and strength while white stands for honesty and peacefulness.

Deutsch: Die Flagge der Türkei
English: The flag of Turkey
Español: La bandera de Turquía
Suomi: Turkin lippu
Slovenščina: državna zastava Turčije
Another version of the flag, using the 1/3 figure instead of 279/800. Note that the leftmost tip of the star is slightly within the hole of the crescent.
Another version of the flag, using the 1/3 figure instead of 279/800. Note that the leftmost tip of the star is slightly within the hole of the crescent.

David Benbennick made this flag, based on the construction sheet at Flags of the World. Note that the specification given there is self-contradictory: the number 1/3 given for the width of the hole in the crescent is wrong. From the other information given at FOTW, it is really 279/800 = 0.34875.
