Summary

WE177 Project Tie.

Detail from the official WE.177 project tie. The project code and a graphic image symbolising the project are depicted in the pattern. The WE.177 project was denied a project tie for many years because the project code was, unusually, itself classified. Eventually, someone devised a design symbolising both the code and the project without it being obvious unless one knew what the pattern represented. The atoms depicted are of hydrogen and (underneath) two atoms of nitrogen. Atomic numbers 1, 7 and 7 respectively.
