For the ACCOMOJI project (“Emoji accommodation in 🇨🇭 multilingual computer-mediated conversations”), we are looking for a motivated student assistant with a strong track record in data science.
The ACCOMOJI project seeks to examine the ways in which people conversing in the Swiss national languages converge or diverge over time with regard to emoji usage, thereby managing social and emotional distance. As the successful applicant, you will apply data science methods in order to quantify accommodation patterns in a previously collected corpus of WhatsApp conversations. You will explore fascinating questions at the intersection of data science and linguistics, in a truly interdisciplinary team consisting of members of the EPFL Data Science Lab and the UNIL Center for Linguistics.
You will be involved in the full research pipeline: data collection, data cleaning, data exploration, research design, data modeling, data visualization, and paper writing.
Qualifications
Experience with text processing, machine learning, and Web development is required. Knowledge of social network analysis, data visualization, crowdsourcing, and the design of observational studies is a plus. Since the WhatsApp conversations were collected in Switzerland, knowledge of at least one Swiss national language is a plus. The applicant should have performed well in classes such as Applied Data Analysis (CS-401) and Machine Learning (CS-433).
Time frame
The position will start on 1 January or 1 February 2021 and will last for 12 months. The student is expected to work on the project for 15 hours per week. The salary is CHF 24 per hour.
🤩 Looking forward to your applications! 🤩
