This image represents the former unofficial flag of Orkney, that being the Flag of St Magnus, which features a red Nordic cross on a yellow field.

The official flag was adopted by the people of Orkney in 2007, having been chosen from a short list of 5 designs, all of which being approved by the Court of the Lord Lyon. The chosen design was that of Mr Duncan Tullock of Birsay, which features a blue Nordic cross, outlined in yellow, on a red field.
