Summary

The navigator Kupe of Maori legend and two sea creatures, depicted in a carved poupou (house post) from the meeting house Tanenuiarangi, Waipapa marae, University of Auckland, New Zealand. Photograph by the uploader, taken 20 May 2006. No rights reserved. Carved late 20th century. Kupe is depicted holding aloft a hoe (paddle), a traditional device to show that he was a skilled seafarer or navigator.
