Summary

Vandimalaiyasaamy (male) and Vandimalaichchiamman (female) are local gods in Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and neighbouring districts of Tamil Nadu, India. This photo was taken in Ettayapuram. Traditional local deities in Tamil Nadu are usually dear to people, more human (less divine) than traditional Hindu gods, and are usually offered fowl, goats, etc., These deities are now getting transformed and merged into organised Hinduism. For example, many Vandimalai* temples have been rebuilt in Hindu temple architectural style, with stone idols in sitting posture, and with navagrahas, Ganesha, and other Hindu gods installed.
