"The Surveyor: Portrait of Captain John Henry Lefroy", oil on canvas painting by Paul Kane (1810-1871); painted in winter 1845/46. 55.9×78.7 cm. The image is sometimes also called Scene in the Northwest.

Original bought by Canadian billionaire Kenneth Thomson at an auction at Sotheby's in Toronto, Canada on February 25, 2002 for a price of just over C$5 million. The image is on display as part of the Thomson Collection at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto (see ).


This image is a faithful reproduction of a two-dimensional work of art and thus not copyrightable in itself in the U.S. as per Bridgeman Art Library v. Corel Corp.; the same is also true in many other countries, including Germany.
