I believe this photo is in the public domain. Since it is from before 1988, I think it would have had to be registered for copyright when it was first taken, and it's unlikely that it would have been, since it was a simple family portrait, taken before Liuzzo's murder made her newsworthy or of historical importance. Even if it was copyrighted in 1949, it would have had to have its copyright renewed in 1977 in order to remain copyrighted. The Detroit News web page I got it from does not list any source for the photo, but does list sources for the other photos on the page, so it looks like they don't know who the original copyright owner was. Copyright renewal records are currently (2005) only available online going back to 1978, and in any case it would be impossible to search them without knowing the name of the original copyright holder. Although it is possible that the photo's copyright was renewed due to its historical significance, it is very unlikely, since it was simply a family portrait, and the vast majority of works never had their copyright renewed in the era when renewal was required. -- Bcrowell 19:28, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)
