Douglas MacArthur's return to the Philippines 60 years ago, a Philippine Marine Corps honor guard stands at attention during the playing of Taps, in honour of those who lost their lives during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. During an Oct. 20 ceremony commemorating the 1944 landing and naval battle, Philippine president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Francis Ricciardone, and others, spoke of the sacrifices made by veterans and the closeness of the U.S.-Philippines relationship still today. Retired Adm. Ronald Hays, a former commander of U.S. Pacific Command, along with Rear Adm. Kevin Quinn, commander of Logistics Group Western Pacific, represented the U.S. Navy during the ceremony, which included a parade where crewmembers from the visiting USS Lake Erie (CG 70) marched.
