Summary
Description |
Schematic diagram showing the internal structure of the Moon. Radii for the inner core, outer core, and zone of partial melting are not well constrained, and are here estimated. While moonquakes have been located only on the nearside (or just over the limb), it is possible that farside quakes exist as well, but that they could not be located because of the nearside distribution of seismometers. Crustal thickness is to scale, and moonquake hypocenters are plotted according to their depth and latitude. While some seismic models suggest that a discontinuity exists about 500 km below the nearside seismic network, some recent investigations do not require one. |
