Leaf-cutting ants carry their piece of leaf back to the nest. Seen at Bristol Zoo, Bristol, England. Back at the nest, the ants do not eat the leaf fragments. Instead, smaller workers cut the leaves into small pieces which they use as fertilizer for growing a fungus that they use for food.

Taken by Adrian Pingstone in August 2003 and placed in the public domain.
